SHoP Architects and Partners Create Giant 3D Printed Bamboo Pavilion for Design Miami

11887993_1137491266280072_2398578146957156356_nOn November 30, most of us, at least in my part of the country, will be dealing with gray skies, cold temperatures, and maybe snow. (Although maybe not – it’s sunny and 70° in Ohio today! I don’t understand, but I won’t complain.) If you’re like me, you may be ready to run away to some more pleasant location by then, and if you’re looking for an excuse, you can always check out Design Miami/, which will be taking place from November 30 to December 4 in the sunny Florida city.

Coinciding with the Art Basel fair, Design Miami/ will draw prominent designers, gallerists, collectors, critics and curators from around the world for exhibitions, trade, networking, panels and lectures. When visitors arrive, they will be greeted by a massive structure that resembles an ancient, gnarled tree with its branches bent to the ground. The 3D printed pavilion, which arches over visitors while at the same time giving them places to sit and rest, is the result of a collaborative project led by SHoP Architects.

The New York City architectural firm was awarded the 2016 Panerai Design Miami/ Visionary Award, which Italian watchmakers Officine Panerai will present to them at the fair. In addition to being honored with the award, which recognizes significant contributions to the field of design, SHoP Architects has been commissioned to design a public plaza at the entrance to the fair. The firm, which has become known for unconventional architectural design and next-generation fabrication techniques, has come up with a giant pavilion, dubbed “Flotsam and Jetsam,” for the fair’s entrance.

“SHoP is a place where people come together without any prescribed idea about what the esthetics of a building or public space should be, then we take complex problems and solve them with both beauty and technical proficiency,” said SHoP Founding Principal Gregg Pasquarelli. “Working with Design Miami has been a great experience and a perfect opportunity to explore the expressive possibilities of tomorrow’s architecture.”

shopFor assistance with the actual construction of the pavilion, SHoP reached out to Branch Technology, whose patented Cellular Fabrication Technology utilizes a giant robotic 3D printer to create freeform walls and other structural components. Additional construction help will come from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), whose Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) machine is capable of 3D printing components up to 20 x 8 x 6 feet. ORNL will print elements of the pavilion with a biodegradable bamboo/PLA composite material, and will surpass their own record for largest solid 3D printed object.

SHoP has also enlisted partners Dassault Systèmes and Thornton Tomasetti to help manage the project. The installation will encompass all of the elements that make modern design technology like 3D printing so exciting: creative freedom, sustainable materials, large-scale production capabilities and more.

“SHoP represents exactly what the Panerai Design Miami/ Visionary Award is meant to recognize: innovation, inspiration and an outstanding point-of-view,” said Rodman Primack, Chief Creative Officer of Design Miami/. “For the first time, we will be installing the commission long-term in the Miami Design District and I cannot think of a better practice to conceive this installation. We are thrilled with the pavilion design and delighted to honor SHoP for the 12 th edition of Design Miami.”

Once Design Miami is over, the pavilion will be permanently installed in the Miami Design District’s Jungle Plaza as a space for outdoor cultural events. That space will be officially launched, in partnership with the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, next year alongside a community program aimed at bringing public sculptural art to the city.

Austrian Jeweler Boltenstern Partners with Cooksongold for Customized Direct Jewelry 3D Printing

Cooksongold_60x16mm_CMYKNot long ago, if you told someone you could print gold, you’d probably be met with an eye roll and a comment having to do with money growing on trees, too. Not so anymore – you can now truthfully claim to print gold and even back up your statement with physical evidence. In fairness, you’re not actually creating gold out of nothing; the material is already there, you’re just using a printer to transform it into beautiful jewelry or other items. Still, it’s a technology that most people never could have imagined would be possible until very recently.

The technique still offers a lot of benefits, but for the most part, people weren’t actually 3D printing metal jewelry until two years ago, when the Precious M 080 jewelry printer arrived on the market. Developed by Cooksongold and EOS, the Precious M 080 was the first Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) printer designed to directly print jewelry and watches, no molds or casting required.

Since the launch of the precious metal printer, Cooksongold has developed several additional metal powders alongside their traditional gold material – including rose gold, white gold, silver and platinum. Their technology and materials have attracted the attention of several illustrious jewelers, including the Austrian fine jewelry producer Boltenstern. Established in 1964, the company has decades of experience in the design and production of precious metal jewelry, and recently they began using 3D printing along with more traditional processes of jewelry-making.

This month, Boltenstern announced that they are partnering up with Cooksongold, using the Precious M 080 to design and 3D print customizable luxury jewelry.

A recent graduate who studied architecture in London and Berlin, Marie has a strong background in computational design and 3D printing, which she began implementing in the business as soon as she took it over. Her vision, of combining classic style with modern technology, has resulted in a line of unique, striking pieces with visible influences of both architecture and nature.

Boltenstern began their venture into 3D printed jewelry in the way that most other companies do: by 3D printing molds and using them to cast the actual jewelry pieces the traditional way. Now, with the Precious M 080 printer, they’ll stand out even more among the crowd of jewelers striving to combine the old and the new in an art form that has been around for centuries, but is still constantly changing and evolving. Zecotek Partners with the Institute of Chemical Physics in Materials Innovation

Previously this week, Zecotek announced the beginning of testing and refinement of an innovative 3D printer design for high-performance metal alloys in conjunction with LT–PYRKAL. On the heels of this announcement Zecotek has just revealed a further aspect of their ongoing efforts to advance the frontiers of 3D technologies. Zecotek and LT–PYRKAL revealed yesterday the formalization of the industry partnership with the Institute of Chemical Physics.

zeco-1The Institute of Chemical Physics, like LT–PYRKAL, is located in Armenia. It is part of an intergovernmental organization known as the International Science and Technology Center that brings together scientists from Georgia, Armenia, Russia, and other countries that make up the Commonwealth of Independent States and helps connect them with their peers around the world.

The Institute was founded in the 1960s and is a world leader in the area of chemical physics. Its research history includes extensive investigation into the products and processes of self-propagating high temperature synthesis from natural mineral raw materials. Its addition, therefore, is expected to greatly enhance advancements in the powders for printing to be used with Zecotek’s newest printers. Director of the Institute of Chemical Physics, Dr.Levon A. Tavadyan described the benefits of this trilateral cooperation:

“The collaboration between Zecotek Display Systems, LT–PYRKAL, and the Institute of Chemical Physics will focus on 3D printing systems and high performance materials applicable in additive manufacturing technologies. The newly identified high-performance metal alloy printing methods, developed by Zecotek and LT–PYRKAL, will be greatly assisted by the expertise of the Institute researcher’s. Zecotek Photonics, founded in 2004, has made a name for itself through the commercialization of novel photonic technologies both directly and through joint ventures with companies from Japan to Switzerland. Building on his company’s history of strategic partnerships the Chairman, President, and CEO Dr. A. F. Zerrouk explained the importance of this latest alliance:
