It’s no secret that Kickstarter is the place to be for launching a new 3D printer. In the last month alone, the crowdfunding platform has seen a handful of new 3D printer or 3D printing accessories that are promising to be “the latest and greatest” in an offering that brings quality up and cost down. Unsurprisingly, a majority of these projects are speaking to different markets and are being successfully funded within a matter of days from their campaign launch. Among others, the Tiko Unibody 3D printer has raised nearly $3 million and has sold over 10,000 units of their new lightweight delta 3D printer design.
Now, a new 3D printer has hit the popular crowdfunding platform and has already raised over half of their campaign goal of $100,000 less than a few hours out of the gate from launching their campaign.
The MoonRay UV DLP 3D Printer from SprintRay is the latest desktop 3D printer to hit Kickstarter after launching on the morning of April 28th. The new 3D printer utilizes Digital Light Processing technology (DLP) to offer a higher resolution than other desktop stereolithography (SLA) 3D printers.
The MoonRay includes a custom-build UV DLP projector designed to last for 50,000 of continuous 3D printing on a print bed that enables prints of up to 5” x 3.2” x 9”. Users can expect their prints to come out with a 100-micron resolution that can layer down to 20 microns.
Created with character designers, industrial designers, medical research professionals, and jewelers in mind, the printer is designed for precision-based 3D printing for a wide variety of professional-grade applications with minimal need for touch-up and finishing.
“This advanced high-resolution technology is available on a much larger scale and we were determined to bring it to consumers in an affordable desktop model,” said SprintRay Founder and CEO Jasper Jing Zhang.
“We worked hard to combine quality and affordability in the MoonRay, using the most advanced technology and highest-quality components. We believe the users of desktop 3D printers should have affordable access to the best technology on the market,” added Co-Founder and Engineer Amir Mansouri.
The MoonRay was also designed to be a pleasing feature to have on a desktop. Among other design considerations, the industrial design was optimized to offer the quietest and coolest printing possible. Additionally, a sleek white or black colorway allows the printer to fit next to other desktop fabrication equipment and the build quality ensures that the printer will last the test of time.
“It contains no consumable parts or hinges, and we have limited the moving parts that are not essential to the printing process,”said MoonRay Chief Design Officer Hossein Bassir.
“Simply pop off the top and you’re ready to go. MoonRay’s automatic support generation makes it easier than ever to get started.”
In addition to the generous build size and high resolution print quality, the printer also comes at a competitive price. For early Kickstarter adopters, the MoonRay UV DLP 3D Printer will start at just $2,499 and can expect to see their printer delivered within 8 months after the campaign ends. After the campaign, the printer is expected to retail for $3,500.
